3 Reasons For Accountability
Are you accountable to your team? What about your clients? The most common thing in life is people who know but don’t do and as a leader, we all know when a member of your team drops the ball, it’s our obligation to step up to the plate and assume accountability because if you don’t; who will? So here are 3 valid reasons why you should be accountable
1). Be the Example- As a leader (and we all are in some way) it doesn’t take much to spot another leader. Ask any leader and you will hear words to this effect “Assume none of the credit when there is praise and all of the responsibility when there is criticism.” That is the true mark of a strong leader. He empowers others You can’t possibly expect to duplicate leadership throughout your team if you don’t lead by example; RIGHT? Keep rolling up your sleeves and digging in the trenches with your team and show them the attributes (even when you’re wrong) in you.
2). It Builds Character- There is something very uneasy about admitting a mistake. Theres that ever uncomfortable feeling in the pit of your stomach when the ‘man in distress’ signal inside you starts going off. Truth is most people would rather walk a pirate’s plank instead of taking responsibility for a miscue. We’ve all been there so when that inevitable moment takes shape, it’s important to take a step back, take a deep breath and keep in mind-it’s never as bad as it seems. Collect your thoughts. Assume responsibility if for nothing else than to sculpt the leader inside of you.
3). It’s Liberating- Alright bare with me here (there is a point). The first time I completely goofed was in college. There was an assigned group project in my theater class where we were roll playing and I mistakenly memorized the lines of the wrong character. Funny thing is I didn’t realize it until we were doing it in front of the class. So here comes my turn and I blurted out (more like belted) the lines, only to realize the other guy in my group was saying the same lines. Everyone looked at me and it hit me like a ton of bricks-I just role jacked this poor guy. So I remember sitting there for what seemed like an eternity. I stepped back, took a deep breath, smiled and said “You know what; I’m playing the role of the damn I just totally memorized the wrong lines guy-you know his name-dumb ass.” I know, I know totally corny but it worked (give me a break). Everyone nonchalantly laughed it off, I kindly asked if we could go last to the professor. Luckily she took mercy on me. I apologized to my group and all was forgotten like it never happened. And I distinctly remember this overwhelming sense of feeling liberated. Like damn, I just screwed up and admitting it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. So please understand, once you’ve done it once, it’s smooth sailing-you can always scream from the mountain tops-”I screwed up” and people will forgive-life really does go on.
The point is being a leader is about overcoming those fears. Believe it or not, your circle will respect you for your courage. They will admire your chutzpah and your team will begin to adopt similar qualities. Then before you know it, the leader inside them will begin to shine through. Thanks and have a great day!
