5 Ways To Boost Energy In The Workplace
Any company worth their salt knows their success is merely an extension of the team they surround themselves with. Do you emphasize an environment where your team can shine through? Here are 5 ways for positive energy in the workplace to ensure a fresh environment full of productivity.
1. The Power Of Recognition-People want to be recognized. They may not admit but some actually work harder for recognition than they will for money. Make sure you go out of your way to acknowledge their hard work and diligence (preferably in front of others).
2. Bigger Than All Of Us- It really is bigger than any one person; isn’t it? People aren’t inspired by a company’s bottom line; are they? You can’t motivate a team based solely on sales projections or flat screen t.v. contests. It will only lead to mediocrity. Paint a more profound picture. How is it bigger than all of us? 3. A Big round Of Applause For Company Culture-Do you emphasize free range? A unique company culture gives each individual the opportunity to be who they are in spite of how quirky it may be. In one way or another we all take pride in what makes us individually unique; don’t we? If anything it’s a means of fulfilling our own self content (alright enough with the psycho babble). Fortune recently came out with their annual Top 100 Companies to Work For edition and Zappos was ranked #15. One of their interview questions is “on a scale of 1 to 10 how weird are you?” Believe it or not they actually appreciate someone who is willing to admit their ‘weirdness.’ They also think twice about hiring a person who takes the question too seriously. It’s part of their culture. This type of work environment makes the daily hustle and bustle fun. It takes the edge off. The less your team feels like they’re actually working the more they will produce. How can you create a fun company culture that makes employees want to come to work day in and day out?
4. Make Sure They Make A Good Fit- It’s important to make sure each person fits into the overall personality of the company. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen someone who is ‘formally qualified’ for the position but their ability to socialize with other members of your staff is non existent. No one likes working with a person who has the personality of a salad bowl. Making sure they naturally fit in the scheme of personality around the office ensures everyone is breathing the same energy in the air. I’ll take personality over being ‘eminently qualified’ any day of the week (this is so under rated).
5. Skip The Bore- Monotony around the office can be a dangerous disease that spreads “like an unstoppable rebel force.” (Sorry I couldn’t help myself 
) Spontaneity can be your biggest ally to fight off the rebels from overtaking your team. Switch things up on a whim. Move your team outside for a day. Take over a Starbucks for an afternoon or first thing in the morning {and without warning} group everyone up, give them 10 minutes to come up with a fresh skit and pitch it (winning group gets treated to lunch). You’re the boss so be original! Taking the edge off makes all the difference.
The point is you need to keep your team motivated through positive reinforcement. Forget the ‘corporate jargon.’ Leave the employee handbook (you spent days creating) in your desk. Be impulsive.
