6 Ground Rules To Being Your Own Boss
Being your own boss isn’t all peaches and cream. It’s a challenge. It’s a a grind. It has its ups and downs and sometimes it flat out sucks. But the truth is for most of us we wouldn’t have it any other way. The pros far outweigh the cons and as much as there are days you want to ram your head into a wall-the victories in between make you feel like moonwalking.
One of the most important aspects of running a successful (definition: its paying the bills) business is the art of employing yourself. The better you get at forming a strict regimen the more successful your business will be. So without further a do-here are 6 must do ground rules to being your own boss….
1. Tell it to the mirror-It’s amazing how quickly a person will conform to follow rules at work. They’re like clockwork. Same routine day in; day out. Punch in; Punch out. Yet when they decide to take that leap of faith and start their own business; the same rules don’t apply. Why? It’s tough getting past the fact that you have no one to answer to-so tell it to the mirror. If you can look yourself in the mirror and HONESTLY say without a shadow of a doubt that you showed up for work, on time and didn’t take a second off-than you’re on your way.
2. The routine of the routine-Setting specific non-negotiable work hours will go a long way in creating momentum. Commit yourself to the actual routine. It’s called getting in a zone and staying there. Good things are sure to follow.
3. Mornings are golden-Become an early riser. You’d be amazed at how much you can accomplish by 9am. No noise. No distractions. Just a clear line of thoughts. Studies show most people are at their sharpest in the morning. But getting started at 10am won’t cut it. Before you know it’s noon and you haven’t even had time to think. Starting early gives clarity to the activities of the day. Try it. You’ll be amazed!
4. Don’t burn too much midnight oil-Yes sometimes we do go all night and all the next day. It’s part of our nature but it’s a surefire way to burn out quick. There is always tomorrow. The longer you go-the less cognitive you are. I understand your sense of urgency but instead of going all night get started early. Does a professional athlete stay up all night to play the championship game the next day? We hope not. You’re an athlete (or fine oiled machine) in your own rite so everyday you’re playing for a championship! Keep the senses keen and the mind sharp. Sleep!!!!!
5. Find A Mentor-There is no substitution. The path of a rising entrepreneur is full of twists and turns. The road will get tough (to downright brutal). Mentors are the best support. They provide insight and experience because they’ve been there before. Find a mentor. Even if that person doesn’t exist in your immediate circle. My most valued mentors don’t even know me. We haven’t met but their insight has been instrumental. Lisa Barone with OutspokenMedia is a personal favorite. She’s way beyond the norm and even though we’ve never had a conversation her perspective is right on point. Shout out to Lisa! A mentor makes all the difference. Please believe it.
6. Learn to balance-Developing a core balance in your life will make your business more successful. Make sure you take time to loosen up. Don’t neglect YOU in the process. Go to the gym, go for a run, take the family on a bike ride, do whatever it takes to separate yourself from the daily grind of your business. Forget about next quarter’s projections or next month’s campaign for a while. Trust me, it will be there come tomorrow. Some people consume themselves in their business to the point where it’s unhealthy. They’d rather hit the office than come to a cookout. It’s sad. What’s the point of building a successful company if you don’t take time to enjoy your freedom? Seems an empty existence.
All of these ground rules are equally important. Write down ways to work towards them. Figure out how to etch them in your mind. Form them. Mold them and concentrate on making them a part of your personality then let the chips fall because you control where they land.
