A.S.S. Syndrome
Americans by nature are the most resilient people on Earth. So when it comes to our success; why are we so quick to quote every excuse in the book?
Despite all the ailments of today’s world; we ignore the one unseen-or what I call A.S.S. Syndrome (Acute Sob Story Syndrome). Of course I am far from a doctor but through my experiences I’ve heard just about every excuse there is on why building your own entrepreneurial dreams won’t work-The “it’s” the “I’s” and everything in between
“Not the right time”
“Don’t have the money’
“Wouldn’t fly with my spouse”
(or my personal favorite) “My (fill in the blank-Family or Friend) said it wouldn’t work.”
Our Own Little Source of Comfort- So many excuses, so little time. It seems people are spending more time rationalizing their pathetic excuses as opposed to figuring out solutions. “Yes” the economy is tough. “Yes” employees are becoming more expendable to their companies with each passing day but has our society become so immersed with symptoms of A.S.S. Syndrome that we’ve decided to cleverly disguise it as “positive reinforcement” to comfort ourselves for not blazing our own path?
Say it isn’t so but the harsh reality is it is.
Living Vicariously-Instead of pursuing our own dreams of success, here’s a better idea-let’s keep punching the clock at work and come home and escape our troubles of the day by living vicariously through the likes of television and celebrities. Forget your dreams. After all, who needs dreams when we can all watch in awe from afar? Instead of expending every ounce of energy obsessing over what the next person is doing, we could be cultivating our own stories for success for ourselves. But “No.” That would be too much work. Oh…the irony!?!? All we need do is continue watching on in amazement at the accomplishments of others and forget about the worries of the day but just like an alcoholic or substance abuser who uses chemicals as a way to escape their problems, when the chemical effect wears off or the television powers off-it’s just you again; alone with your thoughts.
So What’s The Alternative?- The alternative is to throw out the excuses and begin thinking big again. Start that dream business you’ve been contemplating for a year now. Kill the television. Throw out the excuses. Prioritize your dreams as opposed to someone else. “Yes” the road will be filled with obstacles and challenges but what’s the alternative? The next season of “Jersey Bore?” “Real Housewives of I Sit On My Ass and Gossip All Day Long?” Is that where you ultimately want to spend your time and energy? What happened to the American Dream? What would generations before us say? If they only knew!!
There is a cure for A.S.S. Syndrome. It’s called commitment. It’s alias goes by the names Blood, Sweat or Tears. Make the sacrifice for your family so their livelihood isn’t dependent on your employer (who could downsize any quarter now). In closing; when was the last time you were apart of something bigger than yourself? Shout out to all you entrepreneurs on the grind who take fate into their own hands. Thanks and have a great day!!!
