A Whole New Ball Game
Happy Monday! Hope you all had a chance to relax and recharge. Last week I read a fantastic article on BruceClay.com called “Get Real, The Truth About Being An Entrepreneur written by Jessica Lee. Her article brought to light the difficult journey modern day business owners face in their road to success and how the harsh reality is-it’s far from peaches and cream. For those that don’t know Bruce Clay he is one of the pioneers of search engine optimization. He is considered one of our industry’s most influential figures. I like to refer to him as the Allen Greenspan of s.e.o.
Anyone who remembers the former chairman of the Federal Reserve knows that even the slightest quote from Greenspan could change interest rates and market movement at the drop of a dime. Rumor has it that Greenspan could walk in a room, pick up some the most complex and comprehensive financial reports known to man and analyze the entire (hundreds of pages) report in minutes. He was a prodigy of sorts. Bruce Clay to many of us is a prodigy in his own rite in the world of internet marketing so when his team talks, we listen. So after thinking on the many valid points Jessica made, I decided to expand the conversation a bit.
Which brings us to our topic of the day (excuse the rambling:-). The ghosts of business past (generations before us) could offset most challenges with a strong work ethic and although working hard is still important, it doesn’t seem to hold all the weight as it once did. The fields of the modern day entrepreneur have changed. Even though there will always be challenges to face, I still believe today’s opportunities make every entrepreneur’s chances for success greater than ever before.
Why?
Going Virtual- The digital age has bought fourth a new level of accessibility never before seen. Seemingly anyone with internet capability now has the opportunity to reach a global audience. You don’t need a centralized location (like back in the day) to begin building your dream business as an internet connection is now the equivalence of a modern day office.
From Marketing To Infinity- Remember when the playful nature of being a kid was about outdoing the next kid and the first one to say “mine is to infinity” won the argument (unless the other said “well mine is infinity times infinity” HA-those were the days)? Well information now travels at warp speed and the level of accessibility in marketing to a core audience is to infinity. All you need do is take a look at the landscape-Inbound marketing has magnified the demographic almost to a tee, social media (Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin) has provided unlimited accessibility and blogging has now given us the power to run our company using a reporter’s angle as a way to become somewhat of a celebrity amongst our clients and industry. It really is a brave new world.
Unlocking the Information Key-Even though you must “consider the source” it’s never been easier to access free information about your industry. Though the greatest teacher of all will never replace experience, generations before us went to great lengths to figure things out. Nowadays it’s much easier to learn about your industry, the competition and the dime a dozen tutorials to help shorten your learning curve. If used properly this information can help you weave the infrastructure necessary to thrive in our current business climate. It’s all at your fingertips you just need to know what to look for and how (I know it’s easier said than done, but the opportunity is there!!).
So I second Jessica’s opinion. Even though the road of a successful entrepreneur is elusive and more competitive than ever, the tools to obtain it are alive and well. Learning how to harness the fruits of possibilities in business is still an art, but that art is more around us than ever before .
