Activity vs. Productivity
Happy Holidays from Premier Pixels Las Vegas website design and internet marketing team. Today’s topic is somewhat of a double-entendre. We all know running a business is full of unexpected twists and turns. Just as in life-some days are better than others.
So how does one ensure the good days outweigh the bad? “Ahh”- the mythical million dollar question. So heres a little food for thought for the new year.
Many times as business owners we make the mistake of thinking any activity is productivity. In actuality its quite the opposite. At best its a gray area, at worse it’s taken completely out of context. It certainly has a different meaning depending on who you ask. Obviously we would all love to increase the daily productivity within our business; RIGHT? So how do you really know whether your daily activity is productive? Well first let’s explain the difference between activity as opposed to productivity.
Activity- Activity is a tricky word. After all, it can be applied to any aspect of running a business. But there’s a difference between good activity and bad activity. Good activity is performing a task that leads to productivity-for example writing a blog for your website. Bad activity would be spending an entire Monday organizing a client data base (“silly rabbit-that’s what assistants are for”) or micromanaging the activity of your team. Activity can trick you into believing it’s productive when in reality it’s not.
Productivity- Productivity is different. Before you do anything, ask yourself this-will performing this task add strength to my bottom line? Now of course anyone can talk themselves into believing a task is productive for one reason or another but if it doesn’t ultimately add value to your overall direction-it’s activity not productivity. Make sense?
The challenge lies in being able to distinguish between the two. Remember successful people do the little things-over and over and over. Understanding the difference between activity and productivity is easy to do but its just as easy not to do. Making a conscious choice to do one or the other neither hurts or helps you today but the compounded affect over time will either make you or break you. Success has a subtle way of creeping up. Our Las Vegas website design and internet marketing team can’t emphasize this enough.
It’s literally the difference between you running your business as opposed to your business running you. Being productive is about one thing-being closer to your goals at the end of every day. It never ceases to amaze how we (Americans) always look at the finished product. When we someone successful we think “Wow, it must be nice.” What’s overlooked is the blood, sweat and tears. The sacrifices that person or company made for years and years before they reached the point they’re at now.
Most don’t have a clue which interestingly enough could be a driving factor on why nine out of ten businesses fail in the first three years. Instant gratification is few and far and between. We all aspire to be successful in business but instead of concentrating on the bigger picture maybe we should shift our thinking. Start concentrating on the little things. Little things eventually amount to big things. Just some food for thought. From our Las Vegas website team to all of you-Happy New Years!! Let’s all make focusing on the little things more of a priority in 2011. Thanks and take care.
