FTC Investigation into Google Absurd
Good morning from our Las Vegas web design team. There are rumors swirling that the FTC plans on launching an investigation into whether or not the search engine giant is a monopoly. This morning’s article in Bloomberg was said to have confidential information from ‘inside sources’ indicating a major probe was on the horizon. On a day when markets saw tech stocks rise, Google share price fell 3% in the wake of the rumors.
So what’s the big idea?
Why would the FTC suddenly feel the need to investigate Google?
As soon as I saw the article I was reminded of similar allegations made towards Microsoft some years back. Though Google is sure to fight back the end result means lots of time and money-lot’s and lot’s of it.
My issue is how can you try and regulate or penalize a company for being visionaries (seeing it before the masses see it)?
So let me get this straight- Google recognized the timing of the search engine boom, spent an inordinate amount of time and money to pioneer an industry and because of this they’re now being penalized for creating the most significant advertising platform in the history of commerce?
Am I missing something here? What message is the FTC trying to send? The United States is still the great land of opportunity but if your idea is too big; we demand our piece of the pie too? I am a firm believer in competition. Not only is it healthy but it drives prices down and manipulates the great forces of supply and demand, even still I don’t believe for a second a company should be probed simply because they took a leap of faith and got off to a big head start.
Besides, Google does have competition. You may have heard of them-a tiny little company called Yahoo. Clearly the problem is the competition pales in comparison.
The consumer has spoken loud and clear and they prefer the convenience of Google above Yahoo or even Bing for that matter. It seems as Google has it figured out on a much larger scale so in essence, the search engine industry gives consumers the freedom to choose. It just so happens Google is preferred eighty percent of the time. Is that their fault? Should they be penalized for their ingenuity or rewarded for being the best at providing accurate results all the while cutting the consumer’s search time in half?
We live in a busy world. People have enough to worry about. They barely have enough time to spend with their families so when they conduct a product search, they want real results in real time. Google ought to be ashamed of themselves for revolutionizing the power of product information!
I would be curious to know whether any members of these “regulatory bodies” (or their friends and family) own stock in Google? Please don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a level playing field but let’s give credit where credit is due. Google started first, it’s only right they control the reigns in such a vast developing field. The fact is something as complex as search engine algorithms didn’t just magically appear. It’s taken years to fine tune which should make Google the search engine leader by default.
Saying Google is a monopoly is like saying N.A.S.A. has had too much of a head start in their space explorations. Oh wait, I forgot, N.A.S.A. is owned by the United States Government so they’re the exception to the rule. Shouldn’t N.A.S.A. be pioneers by default because they started first? Exactly.
So in essence, is this really about monopolies or penalizing the visionaries? Let’s take this a step further. Somewhere in some obscure basement in the world let’s hope a genius mind is hard at work searching for the next conduit of natural energy to offset our dependence on foreign oil. Their creation is inspired by solar energy and as we speak they’re exhaustively fine tuning their theory and technology at a furious pace. They finally have the product or theory that is going to change the world as we know it. They invest in production and begin marketing their product. Before they know it they have International Government contracts with every nation in the world. Are they a monopoly or did they simply see it or create it before the masses did?
In this day and age, the only thing that creates the illusion of a monopoly is the head start a company gets in developing a product that becomes so dynamic it ultimately changes life as we know it. So should we really blame them or should we pay them homage? Thanks and have a great day!
