Home Page Testing
How do you analyze the effectiveness your web design home page is having on it’s visitors? Test it out. An effective home page has to emphasize 2 components
1. The Product/Service
2. Value/Proposition
And now-without further a do- the million dollar question; how do you determine the right balance between all three?
Answer: Step :1-Evaluate the home page; Step 2- Evaluate the home page again
In order to properly answer this question you must first ask yourself what do I hope to accomplish from my homepage? What action do I want a visitor to perform (giving their email, joining your blog)? Would you rather establish as many leads as possible or develop a more concentrated lead that that has a higher likelihood of becoming a paying customer?
There needs to be a plan, do and review process to thoroughly answers theses questions before you even begin testing the home page because it’s very difficult to establish any rhythm without the proper preparation and understanding of what you’re trying to accomplish. Does that make sense? This will determine the direction in which you begin building towards. Is there a method to your madness? Is the homepage more sales driven or information driven? What is your desired conversion goals? In other words; what is the primary objectives you’re trying to accomplish? Visualize it. Paint a mental picture and in a few words describe what you want a potential client to experience upon clicking to your home page. Put yourself in the shoes of your consumer. What do they all have in common? This must be set in stone before moving into any sort of testing phase or else it won’t have the desired effect.
Most likely there’s a few different goals you’re trying to accomplish. Obviously the most important being to initiate communication between you and the visitor. It’s more than just having a web design with a clean look and feel. Develop a method that takes a visitor from step A to step B to step C and the leads will begin to pile up. Understanding this method is another story. Patterns will form. It begins with following the pattern in which a visitor clicks an opt-in box to initiate a call to action.
What about selling points? Sprinkling in selling points in your web design isn’t as complicated as it sounds. Just try and be original. Present the information in a non-threatening way that oozes the webinality (web personality) your company represents. Be bold yet professional. Be confident yet reserved. Show value. Frankly home page testing is a process of fine tuning. The secret is to keep chipping away until the proverbial chips fall into place. Thanks and have a great day.
