Website Updates-The When And Why
No Need To Go Overboard
Okay. Forget all the thoughts you have about completely overhauling your current website design for the sake of an “all new” look and feel. Sure if your website looks like it’s straight out of an Atari game, by all means, give it a whirl. But most times, there’s no need to completely renovate your current design. Instead think of it as adding new editions.
A Harsh Truth
If you’re not updating content on your site every week or so, you’re losing ground because somewhere, out there among the vast shores of cyber space, (even locally) your competitors are out working you.
The thought of someone outworking me is about as unsettling as imagining the Dallas Cowboys winning the Super Bowl (sorry boys and girls I can’t help i’m a Redskins fan-thanks a lot Dad) . Regardless of your business, we’re all website administrators. With that responsibility comes an obligation to give your users (visitors) the best experience possible. None of us in good conscience can look in the mirror and say we’re providing the best online experience possible if updates haven’t been done in the past three months. Can We?
How Often Should You Update Your Website?
In a perfect world a website should be updated daily. Seems a far fetch, I know but you’d be amazed at how many sites update their information on a daily basis especially in the seo and web design industry. But for someone outside our field of expertise you should update your site a minimum of two or three times a months. Remember, updates don’t mean massive overhauls. They simply mean adding flavor for the sake of winning over the crowd. A little here, a little there. Things like…
- New Promotions/Specials/Coupon (our way of saying “thanks”)
- News regarding your industry
- Upgrades to your products/services
- A New Blog Post (tell me you have a strategy for Blog Marketing-PLEASE!!)
- A Company Sponsored Event (little league baseball, PTA function or community festival)
Again, it’s not about overhauling the site. The fact is keeping previous customers in the loop can go a long way in keeping your brand fresh in their minds (walking, talking endorsements people).
Reasons to Update Website Regularly…..
- It keeps the brand fresh (worth saying twice-trust and believe)
- Good for SEO (more content; more authority)
- Keeps you in step with the competition
- Increases customer awareness (hence a FRESH BRAND)
- Adds value to products and services
“I don’t know how to update my site”
Its not brain surgery people. Most web design companies offer monthly maintenance packages for the sake of regular updates. It could be something as simple as adding a new widget or adding a Twitter feed to your homepage. Doesn’t need a new makeover, just a little addition here and there. Of course it’ll cost you a little more money but the results far exceed the investment. If you don’t like the idea of paying a company monthly then why not have a blog installed on the site? This is by far the best solution. It’s cost effective and allows you to control the pace of content creation with complete autonomy.
Fall Into Line or Fall Behind
Our Las Vegas Web design team isn’t here to force you into updating your website. But the truth is it’s a whole new ball game. In order to stay relevant, well, you have to stay relevant. Stay uncomfortable my friends and have a great day.
