Inbound Marketing Strategies-Once Upon A Time
Okay so maybe I needed a little break from “the blogs that be” but, I’ve missed it. Even if we don’t have a ton of followers yet. It’s a great way to stay connected with our clients and provide insight into their daily routine in this thing we call “BUSINESS.” Okay…so…..
Once upon a time there was this GREAT marketing phenomenon that went by the name Outbound Oscar. Outbound Oscar was born in the early days of commerce. He was a pioneer. He had a stellar reputation for helping countless entrepreneurs achieve success beyond their wildest dreams. He lived by one simple principle-the law of averages. The more eyes and ears he could capture, the more effective Oscar could be (hence outbound marketing). So long as he could market people’s products/services through traditional means like the radio, television, magazines and newspapers, the world was his to conquer.
Life was good. Entrepreneurs were swarming to Outbound Oscar in droves. He could do no wrong. Place the advertisement in the the right magazine or newspaper, add a sprinkle of wittiness, and start landing new business. That was his system and system was good. ”For better results, double the efforts” he would say. Who could stop him? He was it. The end all be all to every entrepreneurs marketing dreams. No fluff, no gimmicks, just cold, hard numbers. ”The more people, the better” (get the point?:-) It was so damn common sense it was sickening.
For decades the entrepreneurs that be were living PHAT. Countless ‘rags to riches’ stories could be traced back to the likes of Outbound Oscar’s and his infinite wisdom. But in the early nineties while Oscar was busy taking his success for granted and basking in the glow of marketing deities, a little girl was born to Oscar’s sister. Her name was Inbound Isabel.
Isabel was smarter than the other kids. From early on, she seemed to have a knack for unconventional thinking. One day while sitting under a tree, an apple gave way hitting her in the noggin. And suddenly an idea flashed before her. What if there was a way to filter the way customers searched for products and services online? What if there was a way to show businesses how to attract customers ALREADY searching for their GOODS to begin with (hence inbound marketing)? She figured who better to ask than Uncle Oscar?
“NONSENSE!” he laughed. Building a place where a businesses could create a steady flow of leads from people already interested? “NO WAY, NEVER HAPPEN!” he laughed. “It could NEVER work.” “The only way to generate business is to market to the masses” he said.
Although Isabel was discouraged, she was smart enough to realize Old Uncle Oscar was too damn stuck on his high horse to see the world was changing. This story ends in much the same way all stories do in business when dinosaurs of prehistoric commerce are too stuck in their ways to welcome change. Instead, they shun it. The Oscars of the world like Yellow Pages, magazine, newspaper, and radio marketing are slowly but surely becoming obsolete. There’s a new sheriff in town, her name is Inbound Isabel.
So What’s My Point?
Maybe I took you down a path with a nice little set up to a story with no end, no middle just a beginning. But, there is a point. There is a reason most businesses cease to exist after a couple years-they overlooked the importance of cornering the market from an online perspective. There is no substitute for online revenue. If your website isn’t being put in a position where it draws people already interested in your service, you mind as well not have a site at all.
Seo, blog marketing, and social media marketing are all derivatives of internet marketing. If you own a business, and you plan on making any sort of impact from the online sector, you need to begin putting plans in motion to live and breathe these two words-more visibility. Even as you’re reading this, somewhere out there, your competition is leveraging their internet marketing efforts to make your business obsolete. “It’s on my plate, but I just don’t have the time to do it now.” blah…blah…blah….
That mindset is guaranteed to set you further and further behind. Procrastination is the Devil’s chloroform boys and girls. Stay uncomfortable my friends. Thanks and have a great day.
