The Folklore Of Social Media

Internet Marketing No Comments

Tell one, tell all-the marketing gods have spoken and we’ve taken notice. Social media is the newest trend to grace us on the cliffs of Mount Olympus, but remember as your parents always told you “looks can be deceiving.” So before the proverbial gods of social media climb the crest of the mountain, take a graceful bow, and anoint themselves masters of all they survey, let’s make sure we understand how to identify the folklore of Social Media. There’s a few misconceptions rising in popularity amongst our esteemed colleagues (other entrepreneurs) in regards to the role social media should play in our overall marketing efforts. So let’s clear up some of the myths-SHALL WE?

The “It’s Free” Myth- General consensus believes social media marketing is free but it all depends who you ask. True there are some very effective social media marketing techniques that are free through the use of third party endorsements so from a monetary standpoint you’re correct-it is free; but is your time? In order to make an impact through social media marketing, there needs to be a level of understanding that it’s going to take work to develop. Search engine optimization takes time to game plan, execute, fine tune and ultimately achieve visibility. Social media is no different. It’s a close relative of s.e.o. and just like any other marketing technique, there is going to be trial and error. There is going to be a learning curve (ask anyone who understands the realm of social media you’ll hear the same thing). It also takes the ability to be consistent in identifying trends (what’s working as opposed to what’s not) so be patient and set realistic expectations. The last thing you should assume is over night success. Expecting instant gratification will only lead to disappointment. So unless your time is free, social media marketing isn’t.

The “putting all my eggs in the social media basket”Lore- “_____________ markets their entire business using Facebook.” Sound familiar? We hear this more often than you think. If there’s ever been a time where the social media “gods” have proven deceptive-it’s now. Yes through fine tuning it can make a significant impact. Yes it is an effective tool but that’s as far as it goes. In the tool box of success, social media should be treated as one tool to contribute towards building your financial fortress. You can never build a house with just one tool; RIGHT? Just remember a foundation is only as good as the tools and materials it’s built with. What do you call a foundation built using one tool? A disaster and as soon as the forecast changes, the winds of change are sure to blow the roof off the lovely business you call home. So to keep things in perspective, your marketing should always involve a balanced approach of s.e.o., blogging, social media, email marketing (to name a few). The likes of Twitter and Facebook are great tools to grow, but use a balanced strategy because too much dependency in one area can lead to vulnerability.

By default we are all products of the digital age but there is always something to be said for the art of balance, especially in business. So as you become more immersed in social media remember-don’t get swept away in the currents. Social media is here to stay but it takes time to develop and is only one component in the vehicle of marketing. Thanks and have a great weekend.
