Happy Monday from Premier Pixels Las Vegas web design team. Hope you all had a great weekend and got some much needed time with family or friends. The annual South by Southwest gathering was this past weekend. The event covers everything from new entertainment to music and everything in between. It’s also where the best and brightest go for the weekend to pitch their multi-million dollar ideas to a slew of venture capital firms looking for the next “big wave.”
As droves of start up founders ascended on Austin, TX., one thing was clear-V.C.s aren’t just scouting for the next billion dollar business model. It seems they’re even more interested in the quality of the business leader behind the concept as opposed to the concept itself.
There was a great article on CNN’s website on Friday-Investors and Funders Hunt for Million Dollar Hookups. After reading the article it occurred to me that even with all the great new business models out there, investors are more concerned with studying the leader behind the idea.
In my experience in business, (I’ve had a few) one lesson I learned early was just because someone has a great idea for a product/service, doesn’t necessarily mean they understand the mechanics behind building a company poised for the long haul. We’ve all heard great ideas a long the way from friends or family; haven’t we? Believe me, I’ve heard some good ones and as I took the unavoidable lumps a long the way, it became more apparent that while ambition may come a dime a dozen; do most have the attrition to withstand the challenges ahead?
We all know every business has it’s peaks and valleys but just as in life- leaders are defined by their ability to guide their organization through the slumps. It’s much easier to function at a high level when it seems like your business can do no wrong; isn’t it?
The CNN article was enlightening for the exact same reason. If a Venture Capitalists is going to invest millions of dollars behind a new trend, they want to first know the leader in many cases before the product. Take the NFL for instance, the most important position on the field (or arguably in sports) is the quarter back position. When they scout talent they aren’t just looking for physical attributes, they’re looking for the consummate leader. A general so to speak who can take an army (no matter how big or small) through hell and high water. Business is no different.
So what’s this all mean to us?
Simple.
The right business model can fail with the wrong person at the helm. Focus on being a good leader and surround yourself with other leaders. This is always a priority with our Las Vegas web design company and we can’t tell you how important it is for all you entrepreneurs out there on the grind. Please hone your leadership skills.
