Tweeting While Emotional (T.W.E.)

In The News No Comments

This week has been a whirlwind of media coverage following the death of Bin Laden. So as details began to unravel; millions turned to their beloved Twitter page to rant, rave or express their thoughts on the death of Bin Laden. In which case the effects of T.W.E. once again reared it’s ugly head.

In the midst of all the mayhem NFL Running Back Rashard Mendenhall felt compelled to take to his page and criticize the general public about praising the death of Bin Laden and even questioned whether he was really involved in 9/11. His Tweets understandably sparked national attention and outrage ensued. Now whether you agree or disagree with his comments is beside the point (most of us emphatically don’t) but this is a perfect example of how T.W.E. {Tweeting While Emotional} can have a permanent and often times devastating effect. So my question to you is…..

Is T.W.E. therapeutic or unhealthy?

Some of us prefer to be more private but theres no denying Twitter is an exceptional tool to connect in real time. It gives us the power to essentially run our own column. So what’s the downside?

It’s a direct line to the brain

The best advice I got as a kid was to always think before I speak. But emotion is what drives us. Twitter puts that incredible freedom right in our face. The power to say exactly what comes to mind without thinking first is like putting a home made chocolate pie in front of a kid who craves sweets(the Italian way of saying ‘sweet tooth’:-))-they can’t help themselves. The fascinating part is when most people Tweet; it’s just them-alone with their thoughts, no editor, no voice of reason to stop them but ironically, once you hit enter {in the infamous words of the great Michael Jackson}-”YOU ARE NOT ALONE.” Add that to celebrities on Twitter and you’ve got trouble.

YES its therapeutic as it scratches that emotional tick but we must learn to exercise restraint because once that imaginary line is crossed (the Tweet goes viral) there is no coming back-and that’s walking a dangerous line.

What feels good isn’t always healthy

Freedom of speech is what makes us the greatest country on Earth. But that freedom comes with a price. Going beyond controversy to what others perceive as obscene has consequences (as Rashard Mendenhall is probably learning as you read this-he better be ready to fork over a crap load to his publicist).

There is really no telling as to how permanent comments are. His attempt to dismiss the unfathomable heartache Bin Laden has caused so many, whether he meant to or not was insensitive and a direct insult to the hearts of so many Americans directly (or indirectly) effected by 9/11. In retrospect ninety seconds of emotional rants could cost him millions and irreparable damage. He would have been better suited to keep those comments to himself.

If Twitter doesn’t prove words are weapons; what does?

Please exercise restraint when Tweeting. You have the right to voice your opinion but not at the price of insult. Some topics and subject matter are better left untouched. It’s a matter of respect.  If you want to be controversial then make sure you think twice about how to go about it. It never hurts to take a step back, take a deep breath and put yourself in the shoes of those you mean to call out. You can still get your point across but think in terms of how the other side will digest it. Studies show that the least effective way to drive a point home is by insulting the other side. Once the line is crossed-they no longer hear any valid points you might make. They only choose to hear the insult. Do it right or it’s a waste of breath.

Have you ever been found guilty of T.W.E.?
