The ‘Undesired’ Effect -Website Woes

Website Design No Comments

What is the ‘desired effect’ of your website? Good question; the answer can be broken down in two stages

1. Pique interest

2. Initiate contact

They balance themselves out in such a way that one doesn’t work without the other. In today’s post we thought we would switch things up a bit. Instead of focusing on the ‘what’ and ‘hows of  website design effectiveness let’s talk about some simple woes that can disrupt the attention span of a first time visitor.

1.Animation Pizazz- Flash animation is a double-edged sword. Sure it makes for a good impression in terms of look and feel but the buck stops there. We interrupt this program for a few insightful comments from the President of the illustrious “Master of the Obvious”  League. ‘Complex animation hinders search engine optimization. Period’ Truer words never spoken Mr. President. Animation makes it harder for your site to index properly. Not only does it impair visibility but it makes your site harder for the average person to load. This delays the visitor from finding what they’re searching for and with all the competition on the internet today; what’s to stop them from leaving your site and finding another one? Think about it. People are busier and more impatient than ever; who has time to wait? Imagine this: Everyone has a family member who is constantly late for everything (we all have a relative who is notoriously late). Drives you crazy; RIGHT? Now if your their own family frustrates them; how impatient do you think a visitor will get for someone they’ve never even met? So by all means if you want a potential customer to become agitated and leave your website; make sure you put a dazzling spectacle of animation that takes forever and a day to load.

2.Industry Verbiage-Of course it’s only fair to assume everyone who visits your website is as knowledgeable as you are about the services you provide. That’s common sense; DUH? Why wouldn’t they know as much as you? In order to create an impression in which you come across as an expert you must over complicate everything by using language only industry insiders know how to decode. Better yet; why not impress everyone by explaining your product knowledge in Russian? Ultimately the end result would be no different. Be sure to include long drawn out information that is sure to confuse. Remember part of an effective website design is the structure of the content. Believe it or not there is an art to keeping things simple in a way in which everyone can understand. Can you say “laments terms?” A good rule of thumb is to pretend you know absolutely nothing about the services or products you represent. What information would be most pertinent to you then?

3. Long Winded Text- Again most consumers are impatient by nature. Research has continuously show internet users don’t like to scroll. They like their information to be short, sweet and to the point. It’s important to condense selling points throughout your website design with efficiency. This means you must structure things accordingly so it flows with a succinct rhythm to grab attention with subtlety. Use bullet points and take them through a sequence. Tweak the presentation based on what Analytics is telling you about your website’s traffic. Eventually you will develop a process that yields the results you’re aiming for. Thanks and have a great day.
