Well Worth The Risk
The Wall Street Journal has a great article titled 10 Reasons To Start A Business This Year. If you’re primary motivation for starting a business is for the sake of money, you’re already starting off on the wrong foot so in light of all of you who are reading this saying “This guy is crazy; why do it if not for money?” Here are 6 reasons to start a business that should take precedence over money.
1.Value-If you don’t really love and believe in the products or services you represent; chances are it’s something the world can do without. In the beginning stages of your business, money is few and far between so without value, what’s your business really worth?
2. Buys Your Time Back- Time is more precious than money. We know this. You can be a billionaire but you will never get back even the three minutes it took to read this post. Think of it like this-for everyday you work hard in your business for the sake of tomorrow’s success, little by little-you’re buying your time back. No more missing your daughter’s soccer game to appease your boss. You’re the boss.
3. Build Your Own Job Security- It’s a new age. The words ‘job security’ hold just about as much weight as a string of thread. If you’re walking into a building everyday that doesn’t have your name on it-you’re building someone else’s dreams.
4. Helping Others-Building a successful business means you have to help others. Whether it be the customers you help with your products and services or the talented team you build to take things to the next level. Building towards your vision and helping your team tap into their true potential is rewarding in itself. Keep in mind, the relationships you build along the way can never be replaced.
5. It Builds You Up-In the United States Marine Corps, one of their philosophies in boot camp is to break you down and build you back up in the image of their proud tradition. Business is no different. The journey of an entrepreneur is one filled with many lessons. Some of the most valuable lessons I learned about life were through the course of business. These type of experiences are truly priceless and can be passed on. You can take these and share them to help mentor those who come after you. Maybe even your children or someone else worthy of sharing your past successes and failures. Lord knows I’ve had my share of both.
6. Start Dreaming Again-When we were kids; there was no limit to what you could dream about. What a great feeling! Remember being able to dream big without criticism from the “here’s why YOU can’t” cynics? There was no one there to put limitations on our dreams and aspiration. But somehow, at some point life got in the way. Reality set in and slowly but surely squeezed the air out of your dreams. Being an entrepreneur can open up the possibilities again. It can bring the inner dreamer in you back to life!
